  RED MOUNTAIN
THE BEST VALUE SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE ON THE MARKET!

Amongst North American snowboarders in the know Red Mountain holds a legendary status. It offers world-class snowboarding, phenomenal powder, no lift queues, empty pistes, and there's a super friendly laid back atmosphere. Because of Red Mountain's distance from any major town or airport it doesn't receive the mass of tourists that the more well know resorts do so when it snows we literally get the mountain to ourselves.

On top of this we are confident this is the BEST VALUE SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE ON THE MARKET!

Living in the local town of Rossland, rated by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as one of North America's "10 Great Adventure Towns to Live and Play" our Red Mountain course offers a true Canadian Mountain experience with a mountain and snow conditions that will make you into the rider you want to be.

THE MOUNTAIN

Red Mountain, rated 9/10 by the World Snowboard Guide, is one of Canada's oldest resorts (opened in 1947) and has a reputation as a powder heaven with some of North America's most challenging snowboarding.

The resort is made up of two mountain peaks, Red and Granite, both rideable 360 degrees around, offering an awesome variety of lines. There are wide open groomed pistes and a good terrain park but it's the off-piste terrain that gets people stoked on Red. The gladded tree meadows are incredible, offering fun powder runs through both open and tree covered slopes. The steeper slopes will challenge you right through the season with plenty of over 45 degree pitches which have won award recognition in plenty of ski magazines. The local backcountry options are extensive offering easy access to fresh powder when the resort has finally been tracked.

"Aficionados claim this funky, old-fashioned cult resort provides some of the most exciting and challenging tree and meadow skiing in Canada. Hard-up, would-be heli-skiers adore it - a day in this part of the Kootenays is like a day's heli-skiing without the helicopter."
A review on 'if you ski.com'

The snowboarding at Red Mountain can only be described as fun! This may sound like a strange comment considering that snowboarding should always be fun, but once you've ridden here you'll know what we mean! There are banks, gullies, kickers, natural half pipes and cliff drops all over the resort. With all this potential you'll start to use the natural terrain a lot more and your riding will improve at a much faster rate. Granite Mountain in particular is littered with rock ledges that offer drops of varying sizes depending on how big you want to go.

The average snowfall per season is 25ft which is one of the highest in North America and because the mountain is so quiet there are fresh tracks many days after a powder dump.

Although famed for its steeps, Red also has a mellow side with half of its pistes ranked as intermediate and there's plenty of open runs ideal for perfecting your technique.

Don't just take our word for how good Red is... click on these reviews:

Powder - Eyes Wide Shut
Forbes Traveler - Elite Skiing
Sunset - BC's Next Big Thing

For lunch we tend to stop at Paradise Lodge a comfortable mountain restaurant or at the base lodge where there's a cafeteria and a popular bar called Rafters.

Due to Red's slightly steeper, more advanced terrain this 11-week course is not available to novice snowboarders. You will need to have done at least 4 weeks riding to come on the course.

EXTRACT FROM THE ROUGH GUIDE TO SKIING & SNOWBOARDING

The Rough Guide to Skiing & Snowboarding in North America rated Red Mountain in the Top 7 of the following categories:

For Experts (alongside Fernie)

Best Mountain Towns

For Best Trees (alongside Fernie)

Untamed and largely untrammelled, Red Mountain lies just north of the US border in a remote location midway between Vancouver and Calgary. Only a small number of skiers make it here, leaving the slopes peaceful and untracked powder plentiful. These conditions and the tucked-away setting have helped the resort develop something of a cult status, especially among experts; two-thirds of the mountain is steep, forested backcountry, a training ground for several Canadian Olympians. As befitting a favourite with those in the know, there's an unfettered feel to it all, with basic lift services and loosely marked trails on the slopes.

THE MOUNTAIN

The resort spreads over two distinct mountains: Red Mountain and Granite Mountain. The former was the original focus of the resort and remains popular for its incredible views over Rossland and its groomed runs, ideal for warm-ups. But Granite has supplanted it as the mainstay of the ski area, its drier, lighter snow and more extensive terrain drawing the majority of visitors.

The conical shape of Granite allows runs to spill off from almost every compass point It's possible to dip off in virtually any direction without getting lost, since a cat-track sweeps round the base, depositing riders at the bottom of the Motherlode chairlift. Given the huge array of possibilities it's worth taking a free tour with a 'snowhost'.

Intermediate

Most of the blue runs are clustered in two areas: on Red Mountain and in the Paradise area of Granite Mountain. Red Mountain is particularly good for carving - the Face of Red one of the best - but Paradise is the bigger of the two areas. It has the best groomers and the gladed skiing amongst widely spaced trees.

Expert

All the designated expert terrain at Red Mountain merits its rating; most black diamonds are steep, the double blacks are dangerous, and those with stars beside them on the trail map are unpatrolled and positively hazardous, with their maze of chutes, glades, and cliff bands. Some of the most challenging and expert runs fan out from Buffalo Ridge; the three Slides runs are all extremely steep, while Cambodia features a series of unavoidable 10-15ft drops. Untracked powder is usually available in Papoose Bowl, Beer Belly, or The Orchards.

THE TOWN

Red Mountain town The attractive town of Rossland lies just three kilometres from Red Mountain and is one of Canada's highest settlements (1023m elevation).

Once a busy gold mining centre, Rossland is now a colourful mellow mountain town whose resident community of around 4000 is supplemented each winter by skiers and snowboarders from all over the world who are lured by the infamous 'steep and deep' terrain and lack of crowds. Rossland has a relaxed laid back scene and you will soon find yourself feeling part of the community. It's the sort of place where even for three months you feel like you 'live' there rather than simply being another tourist passing through.

There are numerous quality restaurants, bars and cafes as well as some excellent snowboard stores, gift shops, and a library. There's live music each weekend at the Uplander but it's the Flying Steam Shovel that normally has the best crowds. One of the more popular bars, the Rock Cut, is situated in the woods between Red Mountain and Rossland.

Situated just ten minutes down the mountain road from Rossland is the larger town of Trail which offers more shopping and a cinema and indoor swimming pool.

The 11-week course in Rossland would suit snowboarders who want to ride some of the world's most consistent powder conditions at unquestionably one of the world's best resorts — without any crowds! This is not a town for someone who is looking for non-stop partying, but there is a great local scene with plenty of house parties and socialising with friends on the course and travellers doing the season.
