OVERVIEW
After intensive riding and instruction with some of Canada's best snowboard coaches you’ll be confidently tackling conditions you might previously have avoided. If you’re searching for a snowboard holiday where you can really progress your riding in a fun, laid back and sociable environment, then our snowboard camps are for you. Fernie has one of the highest annual snowfalls in the world and was rated "Best North American Resort" by the Good Ski & Snowboard Guide 2004. We now run this course on two occasions through the season, over New Year and now at the beginning of March! The courses are very similar, except the one in March sees you staying in a fantastic local B&B instead of our own accommodation; see the accommodation section for full details. We hope to see you on one of these courses in the near future.
COACHING
"My off-piste technique improved no end and the instructors gave 110%. A great 2-weeks, highly recommended."
Daniel Rumble, 29. 2-Week ‘04
We have developed one of Canada’s leading teams of snowboard instructors with some of the industry’s most experienced coaches on hand to help you develop your riding and show you the best that Fernie has to offer. You will receive a total of 20 hours of coaching each week (five hours per day, four days per week). The coaching concentrates on developing your all-mountain skills so you’ll be taught on and off piste, through tree runs, in the park and in the powder.
We use regular video sessions to help you quickly correct your technique and over beers a the end of the day your coach will provide helpful analysis and feedback.
MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING (FERNIE JANUARY COURSE ONLY)
In addition to your on-snow coaching you will learn essential backcountry techniques including safe off-piste travel, avalanche awareness and search and rescue techniques. This course includes some indoor theory as well as tuition in the backcountry digging snow pits and learning about safety equipment.
CAT BOARDING
One of the highlights of the courses is a day cat-boarding. Similar to heli-boarding, but travelling up hill in ‘snow cats/piste bashers’, cat-boarding is the ultimate powder experience but at half the cost of heli-boarding. You’ll get about 8-9 runs in through the day and the trips up in the cat offer welcome rest breaks and a chance to share stories with your powder companions! Held on the final weekend this experience provides the perfect opportunity to test your newly developed skills in the untracked powder of the Fernie backcountry.
SNOWBOARD MAINTENANCE
A comprehensive evening session covering board design and construction plus tuning and maintenance techniques including base preparation, edge sharpening and waxing.
FERNIE
"Resort of the year" - Good Ski & Snowboard Guide 2004 "Best ski town in Canada" - Ski Canada magazine "North America's Coolest Town" - Rolling Stone Magazine Fernie is renowned for some of the best powder conditions in the world, empty pistes and its friendly laid-back atmosphere. Fernie is a strong contrast to the busier mega resorts and offers a truly refreshing winter holiday experience.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Purchased and fully renovated during summer 2007, the NONSTOP lodge is ‘the place to stay in Fernie’. The lodge offers a relaxed and comfortable place to rest your weary legs after a hard days riding. There are single (one person per room) and twin rooms (two sharing a room) available. Rooms have two double beds, en-suite bathrooms and stunning mountain views. If you would like to know more about the lodge please: Weekday breakfasts and dinners are served at the NONSTOP lodge. The NONSTOP shuttle bus will pick you up from the lodge after breakfast to take you to the mountain for another day on the slopes. Our breakfasts and suppers are healthy and filling, designed to keep you going on the mountain. On the March course most of you will be staying in a fantastic local B&B run by local friends of ours who are great fun and will really help you get the true Fernie experience. Kirk is a pro-patroller on the mountain and Jenny has ski instructed for many years. Their B&B is one of Fernie’s finest heritage homes and has been lovingly refurbished to create a warm and homely place to stay. The breakfasts are fantastic; you’ll wake to the smell of freshly baked bread each morning and there are both hot and continental options available. Please contact us to find out about the available rooms.
NEW YEAR'S EVE
Fernie is a great place to spend New Year’s eve. Local bars organise parties which they sell tickets for well in advance. Dave, our course director, will ensure our group is at the best place for the night. We’ll start with a special dinner before enjoying live music, dancing and celebrations to bring in the New Year.
FLIGHTS
Our package includes flights from the UK to Calgary with Air Canada. A UK member of staff will be on hand at Heathrow to see you off. You’ll then be welcomed into Canada by Dave Richards, our course director, before taking the transfer bus to Fernie. We can arrange alternative flight dates for those who are staying in Canada before and/or after their course. Normally there is no additional charge for this, but please check with us for further details. In the unlikely event that direct flights are unavailable we will inform you of this and then look to book indirect flights instead. It is worth noting that the earlier you book your course the more likely we can secure a direct flight.
